The search is currently underway to find Ryan Grigson’s replacement in the Colts front office. There have been several names in connection with the position including Seahawks co-director of player personnel Trent Kirchner, Vikings assistant general manager George Paton, and Packers director of football operations Eliot Wolf, all who will interview for the position at some point in time.

One name that is flying under the radar is the current interim general manager Jimmy Raye III. I believe he is being discounted due to the fact that he worked alongside Ryan Grigson, who proved that he doesn’t have what it takes to succeed in the role.

But before you completely throw out Raye as a contender for the position, let’s take a look at who he is and what they have done. This will give you a better picture on why Raye III may be the best man for the job.

Jimmy Raye III has been in the league for 22 years, including 17 years with the San Diego Chargers. He entered his fourth season with the Colts in 2016 as vice president of football operations. From 2008-2012 he served as the Chargers director of player personnel.

During Raye’s tenure with the Chargers, the team compiled five AFC West Division titles, including a 14-2 record in 2006. That season they also led the NFL with Pro Bowl selections. As a former scout and director of college scouting, Raye was instrumental in the draft selections of: LaDainian Tomlinson, Drew Brees, Quentin Jammer, Vincent Jackson, Darren Sproles, and Antonio Gates.

It is well documented the lack of draft success the Colts have seen recently. With a list of general manager candidates who have a major lack of experience, Raye can separate himself from the pack with his previous success. Yes, we know the success the Seahawks and Vikings have had through the draft, but none have found the level of success that Raye has, as he drafted Hall of Fame caliber talent (Tomlinson and Brees). During Raye’s tenure with the San Diego Chargers, the Chargers led the NFL in total number of college free agents who earned a spot on the 53-man roster.

So before you start thinking the Colts will make a big splash with an outsider, take another look at the talent that currently sits in the front office. I wouldn’t be surprised if Raye loses the “interim” tag and takes full control. We should know the answer in the next couple of days.
