Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger dropped a bombshell this morning on his weekly radio show in Pittsburgh (93.7 The Fan) saying that he is going to take this off-season and weigh all option whether he is going to come back next year or retire.  Ben cited injuries and family to reasons why he is going to consider retirement.

In my opinion, Big Ben will take this off-season to heal, get in the right mind set and then he WILL return next season.  The fire still burns and I think we would writing a different story today if the AFC Championship game was a close game and not a blowout.  There have been many times where players have considered leaving the game after a heart breaking loss, being so close to the championship.  Taking time away from the game should revitalize the juices and give Ben the fire to go for another championship next season.

The Steelers have a interesting off-season coming up with giving the “Franchise Tag” to Le’Veon Bell and work out a contract following the 2017 season.  Antonio Brown who has had a interesting last few weeks was suppose to be working on a new deal with Pittsburgh coming up, but reports are surfacing today that Steelers may be inclined to trade Brown due to his “me first mentality”.  The Steelers did the same thing following the 2008 season when they traded Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes after his personality and “me first persona” got in the way of the team.

Roethlisberger turns 35 in March and is coming off a season where he completed 64.4 percent of his passes with 29 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

“I think at [this] point in my career, at my age, that’s the prudent and smart thing to do every year,” Roethlisberger said.

He was then asked directly if he’d return.

“Like I said, I’m gonna take some time to evaluate with my family and really do a lot of praying about it and make sure it’s the right thing for me and my family.”

In the end I don’t think this is news.  Big Ben will be back under the center next season to lead the Steelers to another Super Bowl run.  At some point soon though,  the Steelers will need to look into the draft at their next franchise quarterback.  We have been blessed the last 13 years having Ben.  In a few years, if not sooner….the Steelers will need to draft their next star QB.

Until then,  Let’s enjoy the final years of Big Ben !
